Cindy Sanyu, the president of the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA), has voiced her concerns regarding the Ministry of Health’s recent directive to suspend concerts, events, and other public gatherings. This decision was implemented as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of the Ebola virus within the country.

Sanyu expressed her intention to engage in dialogue with the Ministry of Health to explore alternative solutions. Her primary goal is to prevent the entertainment industry from facing another period of complete shutdown, which she believes would severely impact musicians financially. She highlighted the struggles artists endured during the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasized her commitment to avoiding a repeat of that situation.

“I don’t want us to go back to the COVID situation. My plan now is to meet with the Ministry and discuss how musicians can be sustained. I don’t want artists to go back to begging,” Sanyu stated during a recent television interview. This sentiment underscores the precarious financial state many musicians found themselves in during previous lockdowns.

As a next step, Sanyu plans to formally write to the Ministry of Health, requesting a meeting with relevant officials. The objective of this meeting would be to discuss and potentially implement safety protocols that would allow concerts and events to proceed responsibly, thereby safeguarding both public health and the livelihoods of those in the entertainment sector. The UMA president stressed the need for a balanced approach that considers both health concerns and the economic well-being of industry professionals.
