A tragic fire has swept through a dormitory at Utumishi Girls’ Academy Senior School in Gilgil, Kenya’s Rift Valley region, resulting in the deaths of 16 young students. The incident occurred just after midnight and raged for over two hours, according to Education Minister Julius Migos.

In addition to the fatalities, 79 other students sustained injuries. Fortunately, most of them, 71 in total, have since been released from hospital care.

Images from the scene depict a grim aftermath, with broken windows and smoke-damaged walls. Grieving family members gathered outside the school gates, anxiously seeking information about their children.

Fires have become a disturbingly common occurrence in Kenyan schools, with over 100 incidents reported in 2024 alone. Researchers suggest that student protests against harsh discipline and poor living conditions are often the impetus behind these blazes.

Minister Migos confirmed that “Investigations are ongoing, but the identification of the cause of the fire… is not yet identified.” This incident echoes a similar tragedy in 2016, where 21 students died in a dormitory fire at a primary school in Nyeri County, a cause that was never definitively established.

One parent, Eunice Mureithi, whose daughter managed to escape, described how the fire started from an “upper dome” and spread rapidly. She explained that the blaze “had barricaded a part of the dome to one side and to the other side the students were unable to come out, but a lot of them were able to escape.”

The deadliest school fire in recent memory occurred in 2001 at Kyanguli Secondary School near Nairobi, where 67 schoolboys lost their lives, an event authorities attributed to arson.
