The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed Joel Ssenyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa West, as the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) for another term. This decision, announced by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, signals confidence in Ssenyonyi’s leadership and ability to steer the opposition’s legislative agenda.

In parallel, the NUP has appointed Jinja South East MP Paul Mwiru as the new Opposition Government Chief Whip, with Harriet Nakwedde serving as his deputy. The party stressed that retaining key figures and reshuffling committee leadership is aimed at strengthening parliamentary coordination and oversight.

Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe received particular praise for his role in grassroots mobilization and ensuring opposition presence during parliamentary sessions. The party also announced new leadership for key oversight committees, including COSASE, PAC, Government Assurance, and Local Government, drawing on experienced legislators like Betty Nambooze.

Furthermore, NUP has designated representatives to various international parliamentary bodies, including the Caribbean-EU Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), underscoring its commitment to global engagement.

As mandated by the Administration of Parliament Act, the LOP has the power to form a Shadow Cabinet. Ssenyonyi’s newly formed 30-member team is notable for its inclusivity, incorporating members from various political affiliations and independents. This broad-based approach is intended to provide robust scrutiny of the government’s actions and present alternative policy directions for Uganda.

The appointment of this comprehensive shadow cabinet comes as parliamentary sessions become more demanding. The team is tasked with navigating the ruling party’s legislative proposals, managing the diverse political landscape within Parliament, and ensuring accountability for national expenditure.
