President Yoweri Museveni’s new Cabinet is set to witness an unprecedented level of involvement from the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC). This powerful organ, which normally has only two or three members in government, will now feature eight members, including President Museveni himself as the National Chairperson.
The increased representation of CEC members in Cabinet is expected to ensure a more robust and unified approach to fulfilling the NRM’s party agenda. Historically, the CEC dictates the political direction of the party and oversees its day-to-day operations.
This heightened influence is anticipated to translate directly into Cabinet’s activities moving forward. Following his recent inauguration, President Museveni emphasized that this term would be dedicated to decisively advancing his development goals. He specifically pointed to initiatives like the Parish Development Model and the GROW scheme as key strategies aimed at boosting the incomes of rural Ugandans through enhanced agricultural practices and value addition.
President Museveni’s “kisanja no sleep” (term of no sleep) mantra underscores his commitment to this agenda, urging citizens to take advantage of the provided opportunities to escape poverty. The prominent CEC members now in Cabinet include David Calvin Echodu (Eastern Region), Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo (Central Region), Jonard Asiimwe (Western Region), and John Baptist Lokii (Karamoja Sub-Region). Additionally, historical CEC members Rebecca Kadaga, Jim Muhwezi, and Kahinda Otafiire have also been appointed, further solidifying the CEC’s role.
This strategic placement of CEC leaders aims to align government actions more closely with the party’s core objectives, ensuring a concerted effort towards national development and economic transformation.
