Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has formally addressed the 12th Parliament for the first time, vowing to uphold principles of fairness and equity throughout his tenure. During a well-attended plenary session on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Oboth articulated his commitment to empowering Members of Parliament (MPs) to effectively carry out their core mandates of representation, oversight, legislation, and appropriation.
“As your Speaker, I bear a profound obligation to elevate and empower all of you to effectively execute your mandate,” Oboth stated, acknowledging the trust placed in the parliamentary leadership. He further elaborated on his role as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Commission, assuring MPs that he would work to create a supportive environment for evidence-based legislation and responsiveness to the electorate’s needs.
The Parliamentary Commission, being the highest decision-making body within Parliament, will be instrumental in shaping these favorable conditions. Oboth also urged his fellow lawmakers to be readily available for their constituents and to prepare diligently for their parliamentary responsibilities.
He called for a spirit of humility and modesty among MPs as they collectively work towards realizing a legislature that is truly centered on the people it serves. Oboth and his Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, were elected to their respective positions on May 25, 2025.
