Police Officer Fatally Attacked by Mob in Nakapiripirit

Tragedy struck Nakapiripirit District on Tuesday evening when a police officer, identified as Richard Nokrach, 31, was fatally attacked by a mob. Officer Nokrach, who was stationed at Namalu Police Station, was reportedly returning from duty at the Moru-A-Jore Game Reserve Checkpoint when the incident occurred.

According to Mike Longole, the Mt Moroto police spokesperson, the officer allegedly knocked an elderly man at Nalait Trading Centre in Loporet Parish, Kawach sub-county, around 7:00 pm. Following the collision, relatives of the injured man are said to have descended upon Officer Nokrach, inflicting multiple stab wounds to his chest, back, and neck. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The incident was swiftly reported to Nakapiripirit Central Police Station, and authorities, including the District Police Commander and a SOCO team, visited the location. Investigations are underway, with witness statements being recorded, and Officer Nokrach’s body has been transported to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Authorities have apprehended two male suspects in connection with the attack, and they are currently detained at Nakapiripirit CPS. Police spokesperson Longole strongly condemned the act of mob justice, emphasizing the importance of allowing legal processes to unfold. He urged the public to report incidents to the police rather than resorting to vigilantism.

This incident underscores the persistent issue of mob justice in some areas and the need for public cooperation with law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
