Veteran Food Critic Apollo Kaddumukasa Kironde Dies at 79

The vibrant food and media scene in Uganda is in mourning following the passing of Apollo Kaddumukasa Kironde II, a distinguished food writer and restaurant critic. Kironde, who was 79, died at Lubaga Hospital on Monday evening.

Known widely for his insightful and often humorous restaurant reviews and dining features published in the weekend editions of the Daily Monitor, Kironde became a familiar voice to many readers. For more than twenty years, his byline chronicled Kampala’s diverse gastronomic offerings, from humble roadside stalls to sophisticated international establishments.

His writing style was characterized by a unique blend of wit, sharp criticism, and an extensive knowledge of food. This approach cultivated a dedicated following among those eager to explore Uganda’s evolving culinary world through his eyes.

Beyond his work as a journalist, Kironde was also a skilled chef and a passionate advocate for Ugandan cuisine. He frequently championed traditional dishes like luwombo and matooke, arguing for their rightful place on both local and global dining tables.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes on social media. Colleagues, chefs, and readers lauded him as a leading figure in his field, crediting him with elevating food writing in Uganda. His final restaurant review was published just days before his passing, a testament to his enduring passion for food and writing.

Kironde was born in 1946 and would have celebrated his 80th birthday on August 20. The cause of his death was reportedly aspiration. Funeral arrangements are yet to be officially disclosed.
