Gideon Onyango, a former Member of Parliament, has been elected as the new chairman for the Pool Association of Uganda (PAU). He secured victory at an elective Extraordinary General Meeting, replacing Bob Trubish. Onyango, who previously ran for treasurer in 2024, garnered 39 votes alongside his running mate Meyan Yusuf Magomu, edging out former Technical Director Robert ‘Pipo’ Kayanja and Paul Okware, who received 36 votes.

The election’s outcome, decided by a slim three-vote margin, concluded weeks of extensive campaigning. This leadership change comes at a critical time for the association, which has faced challenges in meeting the requirements set by the National Council of Sports (NCS) under the new Sports Act. Weak organizational structures have hampered pool’s progress, delaying its registration with the NCS.

Onyango emphasized the crucial role of regional delegates, who voted for the first time, in his victory. He highlighted his focused campaign efforts among these delegates as key to his success. His immediate agenda includes establishing a permanent office for the PAU and mending relations with the NCS.

In other key positions, Rogers Ssemanda was elected General Secretary, defeating Jackson Edau. Muhammad Wasswa Kayiiya was elected Technical Director. Several members from the previous executive committee retained their positions, including Pius Akampa and treasurer Cosmas Segawa. George Katongole will serve as Director of Public Relations, Debborah Ibenu will oversee women’s affairs, and Fauzah Namuganza will represent clubs.

The newly elected executive faces a busy schedule, with qualifiers for the National Open slated to begin soon, leading up to the finals in November. The association’s ability to secure full recognition hinges on addressing past financial oversight and strengthening its governance structures.
