Omuriwe Names Final Volleyball Cranes Squad for CAVB Zone V Qualifiers

Head coach Shilla Omuriwe has announced the final roster for the Uganda Volleyball Cranes as they prepare to compete in the CAVB Zone V Nations Qualifiers. The team, which will represent Uganda in the continental championship bid, features a blend of seasoned players and new faces, aiming to build on past successes.

Of the 14 athletes selected, nine were part of the squad that secured fifth place in the 2021 African Championship under Omuriwe’s guidance. This continuity ensures a core group familiar with the coach’s strategies and tournament demands. Key experienced players include George Aporu, Smith Okumu, Daudi Okello, Bernard Malinga, and Emmanuel Elanyu, all of whom bring valuable international experience to the team.

The squad also benefits from the contributions of the Rwandan-based duo Gideon Angiro and Marino Oboke. Angiro, a standout player who debuted in 2021 and now plays for Police Volleyball Club in Rwanda, is considered a crucial asset. Oboke, formerly an understudy in Kigali, adds depth to the setter position.

Newcomers making their mark on the team include Duke Kyomukama, Mohammed Iga, Owen Omoding, John Bosco Opila, and Willington Talemwa. Their inclusion injects fresh energy and potential into the lineup.

The CAVB Zone V Nations Qualifiers are scheduled to take place at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala from May 31 to June 5. Uganda will face stiff competition from Kenya, South Sudan, Burundi, and Tanzania, with the goal of securing a spot in the African Championship slated for September in Kinshasa, Congo.
