Makerere Impis delivered one of the season’s biggest upsets, overturning a first-leg deficit to stun Kampala Kobs in the Rugby Premiership quarterfinals. After a 23-12 loss in the first leg, the student team arrived for the return fixture with a determined spirit.

Pius Mpoza, celebrating his 100th appearance, was instrumental in the comeback, scoring early and leading the charge. Even an early penalty from Kobs’ Rasul Abiriga couldn’t dampen Impis’ resolve. Edgar Akimanzi added a drop goal, and Ivan Kirabo scored a try, with Mpoza’s second-half score sealing a 30-10 victory on the day.

The 30-10 win propelled Impis to a 42-33 aggregate triumph, sending shockwaves through the league. “I’m so happy that my boys did step up,” stated Impis coach Alvin Nkamba, though he also voiced concerns about the officiating.

Across town, Buffaloes faced their own nail-biting encounter against Mongers. Holding a slim 22-18 first-leg advantage, Buffaloes found themselves trailing 21-21 on aggregate after Mongers had surged to a 12-0 lead in the second leg. A last-gasp try from Joseph Teko, converted by Yassin Waiswa, secured the crucial points for Buffaloes to edge through 42-33 on aggregate.

In the other quarterfinals, Heathens narrowly defeated Victoria Sharks 30-10 for a 35-33 aggregate win, and Black Pirates dominated Walukuba 28-0, advancing with an overwhelming 76-6 aggregate score.

The semifinals will see Impis face Buffaloes, and Pirates take on Heathens.
