Kikuube District in western Uganda is implementing emergency containment measures against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) after a taxi driver tested positive for the virus. The driver is believed to have transported the country’s first Ebola patient from Kyangwali to Kampala before falling ill.

In response, Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Godwin Angalia Kasigwa announced the immediate suspension of all daily markets and a ban on public gatherings in Kyangwali Sub-county. These stringent measures aim to disrupt potential transmission chains and safeguard the community.

Increased surveillance is also underway at Lake Albert landing sites, which are frequently used for transit from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Screening of all individuals entering Uganda through these routes has been intensified to prevent unnoticed entry of infected persons.

Health officials are actively tracing and monitoring approximately 30 individuals who had direct or indirect contact with the confirmed case. Contact tracing is a critical strategy for isolating potential cases and preventing further spread.

The outbreak has raised particular concern in Kyangwali, a major refugee settlement with significant population movement from the DRC. While residents express anxiety, they largely support the implemented restrictions, acknowledging the primacy of health over immediate economic concerns.

Community leaders and health workers are urging residents to cooperate with health teams, report any suspicious symptoms promptly, and adhere to preventive measures, emphasizing that early detection and reporting are crucial for controlling the disease. Door-to-door sensitization campaigns and monitoring are being conducted in high-risk areas.

Uganda has recorded seven confirmed cases of Ebola, involving the Ebola Bundibugyo strain, in its latest outbreak. Health authorities warn that Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and contaminated materials, highlighting the importance of early detection and isolation.
