The 12th Parliament of Uganda has convened for its first sitting at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, marking the commencement of a critical electoral process. Presiding over the historic session is Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, who is overseeing the election of the new Speaker through a secret ballot. President Yoweri Museveni is in attendance for this significant event in national governance.
Lawmakers are choosing from a list of three candidates vying for the Speakership. Hon. Jacob Markson Oboth, representing West Budama Central, was nominated by Hon. Jessica Alupo (Katakwi District Woman) and seconded by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze (Kibaale County).
In a move highlighting the diverse political landscape, the opposition presented Hon. Paul Mwiru, the Member of Parliament for Jinja South East, who was nominated by Hon. Hassan Kirumira (Katikamu South). The third candidate, Hon. Norbert Mao of Laroo-Pece Division, a prominent opposition figure, was nominated by Hon. Peter Okot (Tochi County).
Justice Zeija informed the 370 eligible Members of Parliament that once the Speaker is declared, that individual will then take charge of the subsequent election for the Deputy Speaker. This process follows the swearing-in of the new Members of Parliament last week, setting the stage for the leadership of the legislative arm of government. The elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker will replace the outgoing ones, Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa.
