The 12th Parliament of Uganda has officially commenced with the election of its leadership. West Budama Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, emerged victorious as the Speaker, securing a significant 441 votes during the inaugural session held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on May 25, 2026.
The election process was overseen by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija and attended by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Oboth’s nomination was supported by Hon. Jessica Alupo and Hon. Frank Tumwebaze. He defeated fellow contenders Hon. Paul Mwiru, who garnered 60 votes, and Hon. Norbert Mao, who received 15 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Speaker Oboth expressed gratitude, attributing his success to divine timing and perseverance. He pledged to serve all members, emphasizing that the Speaker’s role is one of service. Oboth outlined seven key pillars for his leadership, including a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, enhanced accountability, evidence-based debates, and a people-centered approach to legislation.
He also committed to fostering transparency and a professional relationship with the media, recognizing them as vital conduits of public information. Oboth promised structural reforms aimed at strengthening parliamentary oversight and ensuring the efficient monitoring of public resources.
Alongside Oboth, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the MP for Ruhinda North County, was elected Deputy Speaker, receiving 457 votes. He overcame competition from Nyakato Asinansi and Sarah Aguti. Tayebwa pledged to serve with fairness and humility, vowing to work collaboratively with Speaker Oboth.
President Museveni congratulated the newly elected officials and urged them, along with all leaders, to prioritize the interests of citizens and ensure the effective delivery of services. He also cautioned ministers against complacency and emphasized the importance of diligent oversight of government programs, particularly those aimed at poverty reduction.
The Parliament is set to reconvene on June 04, 2026, for the President’s State of the Nation Address.
