The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has put its weight behind Jacob Oboth-Oboth, endorsing him as their candidate for the coveted position of Speaker of Parliament. Oboth-Oboth, who also represents West Budama Central in Parliament and previously served as Defence Minister, garnered the party’s support during a caucus meeting at State House Entebbe on Sunday.
Complementing this endorsement, the caucus also selected Thomas Tayebwa, the current Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North and the incumbent Deputy Speaker, to run as the party’s choice for Deputy Speaker. This decision means Tayebwa will seek to retain his position in the upcoming parliamentary session.
Significantly, reports indicate that the other 18 individuals who had expressed interest in either the Speaker or Deputy Speaker roles chose to withdraw their candidacies in favor of Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa. This move streamlines the NRM’s leadership selection process internally.
These endorsements position Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa as strong contenders as the 12th Parliament prepares for its inaugural sitting. The official election for these crucial parliamentary leadership roles is slated for Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. This outcome follows a period of active political maneuvering and internal deliberation within the NRM regarding parliamentary leadership.
