The Kamuswaga of Kooki, Apollo Sansa Kabumbuli II, has reignited efforts to secure formal government recognition for the Bakooki people as a distinct ethnic group. Speaking at the 22nd anniversary celebrations of his ascension at the old royal palace in Rakai, Kabumbuli stressed Kooki’s independence.
“We do not depend on anyone. We are autonomous and no one should consider us to be under another kingdom,” he declared, urging the government to “respect and recognise this identity.”
The event, which was observed with strict Ebola prevention measures, saw a large turnout of subjects, cultural leaders, and political figures. Notably, the Kyotera County MP-elect, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, attended on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni.
In a message delivered by Kasolo, President Museveni pledged ongoing cooperation and praised the Kamuswaga for fostering unity. The President also encouraged residents to engage with government initiatives aimed at wealth creation, warning that a reliance on subsistence farming contributes to widespread poverty.
During his address, Kabumbuli also highlighted critical issues concerning social services in the Kooki region. He pointed to inadequate road infrastructure, limited access to electricity, and insufficient clean water supply as significant factors contributing to preventable diseases and fatalities.
The anniversary celebrations also served to underscore the ongoing separation between Kooki and the Buganda Kingdom. The Kooki administration has, since 2022, abstained from participating in Buganda events, including the Masaza Cup football tournament.
“We are now focused on development and we shall not entertain forces that seek to divide our people,” stated Kooki spokesperson, Stanley Ndawula. Kooki, historically rooted in the Rakai and Kyotera districts, maintains its long-standing tradition of operating independently of the Buganda Kingdom.
