A wide-ranging corruption investigation, reportedly initiated by President Yoweri Museveni, has reportedly expanded its scope to encompass officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) and the judiciary. The inquiry, which initially focused on former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, is now examining connections within these key government institutions.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), with support from defense intelligence, have been conducting searches of properties associated with Among. The investigation is believed to extend to individuals who may have facilitated illegal activities or benefited from her alleged influence.

Sources suggest that several Electoral Commission staff, including lawyers and commissioners, have been summoned and questioned at the CID headquarters in Kibuli. Investigators are reportedly reviewing their communications and statements regarding alleged links to Among, particularly concerning the facilitation of disqualifications or manipulation of election outcomes during recent electoral cycles.

While at least 10 officials from both the EC and the judiciary are said to be under scrutiny, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi stated he was unaware of any implicated officials, deferring specific inquiries to the individuals themselves.

The probe has also broadened to include members of parliament and parliamentary staff, who are allegedly connected to businesses linked to the former speaker or appear in recovered financial transaction records. Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba hinted at the investigation’s progress, stating that recovered funds would be returned to the government treasury.

Investigators are scrutinizing financial networks and procurement deals, using data from confiscated devices to trace communication and financial activities. The ongoing investigation is expected to bring more officials and MPs under examination, potentially influencing the upcoming race for the speaker of the 12th parliament.
