Sex workers operating in Ugandan border towns have been urged to temporarily halt their services as a precautionary measure against the Ebola virus. This advisory comes as both Uganda and neighboring Kenya heighten surveillance efforts in response to renewed outbreaks in the region, notably in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Officials have identified individuals in close contact professions, such as sex workers, as particularly vulnerable due to the high volume of long-distance truck drivers passing through border corridors. Assistant Resident District Commissioner Richard Chris Kakwezi highlighted that the nature of sexual activity poses a significant risk of transmission if an infected individual, potentially a truck driver, enters the country.
Kakwezi emphasized that Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, contaminated objects, and infected animals. He stressed that while the virus is not airborne, close physical contact during sexual encounters could rapidly accelerate its spread, especially if preventive hygiene measures are not strictly observed.
To counter potential cross-border transmission, enhanced screening measures are now in place at key border crossings like Busia and Malaba. Health teams are actively checking travelers for symptoms, reviewing travel histories, and ensuring adherence to hygiene protocols. Ugandan and Kenyan authorities are collaborating closely, sharing information and coordinating their public awareness campaigns to ensure vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspected cases.
Health officials continue to advocate for regular handwashing, consistent use of personal protective equipment, and avoiding physical contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms as crucial preventive strategies. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any potential concerns to health authorities immediately.
