Uganda is rapidly establishing itself as a prime hub for high-profile conferences and events across Africa. This trajectory is highlighted by the ongoing Pan-African Convention of Royals, Investors, and Diaspora Leaders, taking place from May 21 to 25.

The convention brings together a diverse group of African monarchs, traditional rulers, diplomats, and global investors. It encompasses several significant forums, including the 8th African International Dialogue Organization (AIDO) Conference, a Royal Summit, and the Pan-African Diaspora Economic and Investment Forum, coinciding with the 63rd African Liberation Day celebrations.

This event follows a string of successful high-level gatherings hosted by Uganda. The nation recently played host to the landmark Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the G-77 plus China Summit, attracting numerous heads of state and thousands of international delegates. Other notable events include the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth and the East African Court of Justice Judicial Conference, drawing judicial leaders from across the continent.

A significant driver of this enhanced hosting capacity is Uganda’s substantial investment in infrastructure. The country has focused on developing top-tier hotels, improving road networks, enhancing security, and upgrading digital connectivity and aviation facilities. The recently constructed Speke Resort Convention Centre stands out as a key venue.

The Ugandan government views the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector as a crucial component of its economic diversification strategy. According to Juliana Kagwa, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), hosting events aligns with efforts to promote Uganda as a leading destination.

The MICE sector is recognized for its economic benefits, including generating foreign exchange, creating jobs, upgrading infrastructure, and boosting the country’s global profile for tourism. UTB data indicates that Uganda ranked sixth in Africa for international conferences, commanding a 5% share of the continental MICE market, which itself is 3% of the global industry.

As Uganda continues to host major continental dialogues, it is demonstrating its growing influence and capability in facilitating significant global and regional engagements. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
