The path to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games for aspiring boxers officially starts in April 2027, as announced by World Boxing, the sport’s new international governing body.
The qualification process will span across several prestigious events, including three world championships and five continental tournaments, providing athletes with multiple opportunities to earn their place in LA28.
The journey commences with the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, where 44 Olympic slots will be contested. This will be followed by five continental qualifiers across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, offering a combined 112 slots.
Two World Qualification Tournaments will further shape the field. The first is set to offer 48 slots, with the number of places available at the final World Qualifier in May 2028 to be determined later. The overall goal is to fill 248 available slots, with a historic gender parity, offering an equal number of opportunities for both men and women.
Each nation can qualify a maximum of 14 boxers, split evenly with seven men and seven women. While 234 slots are earned through competition, six are reserved for the host country, the USA, and eight are universality places.
World Boxing, established amidst disputes between the IOC and the former IBA, will oversee these Olympic qualifiers for the first time. Eligibility criteria require boxers to be born between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 2009, and to participate in at least one qualification event.
Details regarding the specific venues for these qualification tournaments are yet to be announced, as World Boxing prepares to initiate the host bidding process.
