President Yoweri Museveni has joined the nation in mourning the passing of Moses Karangwa, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson for Kayunga District. Karangwa died tragically in a road accident last week.

Museveni, in a message delivered by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, lauded Karangwa as a devoted party member instrumental in Uganda’s socio-economic progress. “Through his mobilisation for the ruling party, he had put a brick on the country’s socio-economic transformation,” the President’s message stated, adding that Karangwa was “gold” to Kayunga. The President offered a condolence of Shs 100 million to the bereaved family.

A large number of mourners, including prominent government and security officials, attended the burial in Kayunga. NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong remembered Karangwa as a national figure who consistently used his personal funds to support party activities. “Late Karangwa was a loyal party cadre and a clever man who had answers for every question,” Todwong remarked, pledging the party’s support to the family.

The funeral was also marked by emotional tributes from Karangwa’s family. His daughter, Jacky Birungi, shared her last moments with him and expressed dismay at those who celebrated his death. “It is shocking that some people were dancing and celebrating the death of Karangwa, a man who was using his personal money and did everything for the people,” she said.

As Karangwa was laid to rest, Minister Babalanda and other prominent figures urged his heirs to safeguard his significant estate and prevent property disputes. They advised the family to unite and leverage the inheritance for collective prosperity. Socio-political commentator Frank Gashumba also dismissed negative narratives surrounding Karangwa, highlighting his generosity.

In a gesture honoring Karangwa’s commitment to his community, Gen. Salim Saleh contributed Shs 40 million towards the completion of a church Karangwa was building in Budaali village.
