Parliament Officials Evading Arrest Over Corruption Probe

A major corruption inquiry into the Ugandan Parliament has escalated, with more than six senior officials now facing arrest. These individuals have repeatedly ignored police summonses over the past two weeks and are reportedly in hiding.
Investigators state that the missing officials’ testimony and their refusal to hand over crucial parliamentary documents are significantly impeding the anti-corruption probe. While their identities remain undisclosed by security agencies, the focus is reportedly on those within the legislature’s inner circle.
This development follows a turbulent period for the former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, who withdrew from the speakership race. Among had pledged cooperation with ongoing state investigations.
Despite this pledge, security forces conducted raids on Among’s residences and parliamentary offices over the weekend. Seized items include luxury vehicles, substantial amounts of cash in various currencies, and numerous financial and administrative documents.
The investigation has also expanded to include police officers previously assigned to Among. Several of these officers have been arrested, with interrogations allegedly revealing complicity in concealing criminal activities and facilitating the movement of illicit funds.
Security aides have also fled, prompting a nationwide manhunt. Investigators have issued a stern warning that any remaining parliamentary staff attempting to evade the investigation will be apprehended.
