President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda recently welcomed former South African President Jacob Zuma to Kampala for discussions aimed at boosting business and investment cooperation.
The meeting, held at State Lodge Nakasero, saw both leaders and accompanying officials delve into potential partnerships across several vital Ugandan economic sectors. Areas of focus included energy generation and transmission, irrigation systems, and adding value to mineral resources.
President Museveni reportedly described Mr. Zuma’s investment proposals as constructive and supportive of Uganda’s industrialization goals. He emphasized the government’s dedication to assisting serious investors, particularly those focused on manufacturing and agricultural advancement. “Energy is the bone marrow of the economy,” Museveni stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to maintaining low electricity costs as a crucial factor for industrial growth and investment attraction.
Discussions also underscored Uganda’s ongoing efforts to promote value addition and industrial development to enhance exports, create employment, and reduce the outflow of raw materials. Affordable electricity, efficient railway transport, and accessible financing were identified as key economic enablers.
Mr. Zuma, who arrived amid significant political and legal challenges in South Africa, including his role in the new uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s electoral success, lauded President Museveni for the warm reception. He conveyed his assurance of continued investment cooperation between Uganda and South Africa, projecting an image of continental influence despite his domestic struggles.
