President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurated the 10th Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo at Speke Resort Munyonyo, using the occasion to underscore Uganda’s distinct advantages as a tourist destination. He addressed recent anxieties surrounding the Ebola virus, reassuring both local citizens and international guests that early detection ensures effective management.

“Ebola spreads through intimate contact and an infected person only develops visible signs after several days. If it is reported early, it is treatable,” President Museveni explained, differentiating its spread from that of COVID-19. He noted that while the outbreak originated in a neighboring country, Uganda’s response involved targeted measures like closing specific border markets, rather than a complete border shutdown.

Shifting focus to tourism, President Museveni celebrated Uganda’s unique geography, situated directly on the Equator, which contributes to its consistently pleasant, moderate climate due to its high altitude. He echoed Winston Churchill’s sentiment, calling Uganda the “Pearl of Africa,” and emphasized that its appeal extends beyond natural beauty to include its vibrant culture, cuisine, and peaceful environment.

“When you are talking of Uganda as a tourism destination, you are talking about comfort, culture, food and peace,” he stated. The President also lauded the health benefits and authenticity of indigenous African foods.

On the economic front, President Museveni announced that Uganda has progressed beyond lower-middle-income status and is now aiming for upper-middle-income. He attributed this steady growth to the commercial agriculture, manufacturing, and service sectors. Plans are also underway to enhance tourism by offering more flexible and extended visa arrangements for visitors.

Earlier remarks by Permanent Secretary Doreen Katusiime and Uganda Tourism Board CEO Juliana Kagwa highlighted the sector’s recovery post-pandemic, emphasizing the role of peace, stability, and infrastructure development. They also pointed to recent international summits and preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as key drivers in showcasing Uganda globally. The expo aims to market Uganda as a premier destination, bringing together industry stakeholders and international buyers.

This event was officially launched by President Museveni at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Its aim is to promote Uganda as a sought-after travel destination.
