Speculation is mounting that Anita Among’s tenure as Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament may have been cut short due to her conspicuous display of wealth and perceived conduct.
Reports suggest that Among’s lavish lifestyle, including high-end fashion, luxury vehicles, and significant property investments, drew considerable attention and criticism. This opulence, coupled with her actions within Parliament, is now being examined as potential factors in the decision not to renominate her for the Speaker position.
While Among had expressed intentions to serve multiple terms, her aspirations were reportedly dashed following a meeting at State House. The exact reasons for this shift remain a subject of debate, but the timing coincided with public scrutiny of her personal assets and parliamentary decisions.
Critics have pointed to specific instances, such as the acquisition of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan valued at billions of shillings, which reportedly raised eyebrows even within the President’s family. Prior to this, President Museveni had publicly cautioned against corruption during the opening of a hospital and school funded by Among, questioning the source of her wealth.
Furthermore, her approach to parliamentary proceedings, including the swift passage of laws and the censure of members of Parliament, has been characterized by some as overstepping her mandate and demonstrating dictatorial tendencies. The personal nature of some of these decisions, like the censure of MPs Francis Zaake and Persis Namuganza, has also come under fire.
Despite her public calls for decorum, observers noted instances where Among herself appeared to engage in jeering and commanding MPs, highlighting a potential disconnect between her expectations and her actions. The ban she imposed on the Deputy Attorney General for advising against the Anti-Homosexuality Act also sparked debate about her adherence to legal boundaries.
Ultimately, the narrative suggests that a combination of perceived “primitive accumulated” properties, flamboyant spending, and a controversial style of leadership may have significantly contributed to her departure from the Speaker’s office.
