Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom has announced the suspension of its highly anticipated 32nd Empango celebrations, originally slated for June 11. The decision comes as a precautionary measure following the outbreak of Ebola, with the kingdom prioritizing public health and safety.
The annual Empango event, which honors the King’s ascension and draws thousands of attendees including cultural leaders, government officials, tourists, and subjects, also includes various pre-activities such as golf and football tournaments. Kingdom Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Owek Kirungi Byakutaga, stated that these gatherings pose a significant risk of spreading the virus, thus necessitating the suspension.
“We have decided to suspend both the Empango celebrations and some of its pre-activities… because they attract many people, and this does not go in line with the Ebola prevention guidelines,” Mr. Owek explained. He emphasized that the primary goal is to protect lives and prevent the potential transmission of the disease.
However, a local language competition conducted via radio stations will continue, as it involves limited participants and can be managed safely according to health guidelines. The kingdom will closely monitor the Ebola situation and provide updates regarding the rescheduled celebrations.
The suspension coincides with heightened surveillance by health officials in the Bunyoro sub-region due to suspected Ebola cases. Dr. Lawrence Tumusiime, Hoima District Health Officer, confirmed the situation remains stable but urged the public to remain vigilant, practice hygiene measures like hand washing, and report any concerning symptoms immediately.
Mr. Maxiwel Ahuura, chairperson of the Association of Bunyoro Cultural Heritage, supported the kingdom’s decision, underscoring the importance of public health. The Empango celebrations are a significant cultural and economic event for western Uganda, boosting local businesses.
According to Hoima Resident City Commissioner, Mr. Badru Mugabi, three individuals have been isolated in Hoima District after exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms.
