Authorities in Arua District have intensified security and health surveillance at border points connecting to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This heightened vigilance follows the confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in the DRC’s Ituri Province.

Health officials and a dedicated taskforce, led by Arua Resident District Commissioner Mr. Gore Goffin, are conducting stringent screenings for all individuals entering and exiting both countries. The measures are specifically designed to prevent any potential spread of the virus from Ituri Province into Uganda, particularly through the Vurra border.

“I want to ask everybody today that because of the Ebola outbreak, I want you to be very vigilant, wash your hands, and keep a social distance,” urged Mr. Goffin, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation. He further advised citizens to report any individuals exhibiting severe symptoms such as unexplained oozing of blood, sudden headaches, diarrhea, or vomiting to the nearest authorities for a swift response.

In line with these efforts, handwashing facilities are being installed in all public spaces across Arua District. The Ministry of Health in the DRC confirmed the Ebola outbreak in Ituri on May 15, 2026. In response, the Ugandan Ministry of Health has implemented various mitigation strategies to address the potential threat.
