Uganda will soon welcome a team of Russian health specialists to enhance its response to the current Ebola outbreak. This assistance comes as fears of regional transmission grow, particularly following confirmed cases in Uganda and the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to Russia’s consumer protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor, the specialists will arrive in Kampala to aid Ugandan authorities with epidemiological investigations and outbreak containment strategies. The team’s objective is to trace the disease’s spread, identify infected individuals, and analyze transmission patterns to quickly control the outbreak.

Russia has also pledged technical and material support, including diagnostic test kits for Ebola, aimed at improving Uganda’s capacity for rapid detection and further containment. This collaboration builds on previous health cooperation, including Russia’s donation of a mobile anti-epidemic laboratory in 2024 and training for Ugandan specialists in infectious disease monitoring.

Regional health bodies, like the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), have expressed significant concern about the outbreak’s cross-border implications due to intense population movement between the DRC and Uganda. In response, the Africa CDC convened an emergency meeting to coordinate a continental strategy.

Uganda has implemented stricter public health measures, including the postponement of the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations to prevent large gatherings that could accelerate virus transmission. The Ministry of Health has also intensified contact tracing, border screenings, and surveillance at health facilities.
