National Resistance Movement (NRM) Director for Mobilisation, Rosemary Sseninde, has spoken out against those who are reportedly celebrating the recent death of Moses Karangwa, a Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Duties. Karangwa passed away in a road accident.
During a requiem mass held in Kayunga Town, Sseninde emphasized the cultural and moral impropriety of rejoicing over someone’s demise. “In our culture it’s not morally right to celebrate one’s death. I ask you to give late Karangwa’s family a chance to mourn him,” she stated, adding that if anyone was without fault, they could cast the first stone.
Sseninde recalled Karangwa’s dedication, particularly mentioning his efforts during the 2021 LC5 by-election where he significantly contributed to the NRM candidate’s victory. Echoing her sentiments, State Minister for Finance Amos Lugolobi advised against celebrating deaths, calling for greater discipline from Ugandans.
The NRM, in a statement read by Sseninde on behalf of Secretary General Richard Todwong, described Karangwa’s death as a “shocking” loss of a “great mobiliser” and offered condolences of Shs10 million.
Karangwa’s daughter, Jacklyn Birungi, remembered her father as someone who did not hold grudges and was generous, offering financial assistance to those in need without harboring ill will.
His brother, Gustine Tumwine, noted that Karangwa’s strong support for the NRM often drew criticism from opponents. The parish priest, Rev Fr. Emmanuel Walakira, also spoke at the mass, highlighting Karangwa’s contributions to the Catholic faith and the local parish, particularly his support for church projects.
