Children of the late Chris John Bakiza, former head of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), have formally approached the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.
They are raising serious concerns about the ongoing criminal proceedings against their stepmother, Robinah Mbabazi. In a letter dated May 18, one of the children, who preferred to remain anonymous, detailed allegations of delayed court proceedings, citing claims of illness and lack of legal representation by the accused.
The family is also questioning the bail conditions granted to Mbabazi and the subsequent referral of the case to mediation, which they report has failed. This dispute is intertwined with a larger inheritance battle in the High Court concerning the distribution of the late Bakiza’s estate.
Allegations against Mbabazi include alleged intermeddling with the estate, particularly the unauthorized cutting of trees valued at Shs70 million from a family farm in Mityana District, despite active legal proceedings. The children are challenging the validity of their father’s will, arguing it inadequately provides for younger dependants and are seeking the removal of the current executors due to alleged mismanagement.
The complainants have requested that the criminal case be transferred to Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, expressing a loss of confidence in the current handling of the matter and emphasizing the need for a swift and transparent trial. The Chief Magistrate’s Court has yet to issue a response to the family’s petition.
