Last Saturday night at Lugogo Cricket Oval, Feffe Bussi’s “Hip Hop Kuntiko” (Hip Hop on Top) concert dispelled any doubts about the vitality of Ugandan hip hop. The event, meticulously organized by Talent Africa Group, transformed into a bold statement on the genre’s resilience and unity.
Despite an initially uncertain turnout around 6 pm, the venue gradually filled. By 9 pm, the Cricket Oval was buzzing with energy, proving that dedicated hip hop fans are a force to be reckoned with. Feffe Bussi wasted no time, launching into a high-energy set precisely at 10 pm with his hit track “Who Is Who.”
Throughout his nearly two-hour performance, Feffe Bussi seamlessly blended his popular songs like “Yes-No,” “Gulu,” and “Bad Segu” with classics and even sampled Hugh Masekela. The concert also provided a crucial platform for emerging artists through rap battles, offering opportunities for cash prizes and recording deals, reinforcing hip hop’s culture of mentorship and competition.
The night was amplified by a series of impressive collaborations. Feffe Bussi was joined by artists such as Vinka, The Mith, Winnie Nwagi, Dax Vibez, Navio, Flex D’Paper, Big Sam, and Lyrical G, with a particularly memorable moment featuring a rendition of “Still D.R.E.” alongside several hip hop veterans. Pioneering artist GNL Zamba also made an appearance, with Feffe Bussi acknowledging him as a significant inspiration.
