The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (CID) and other security agencies have extended their probe into corruption allegations against former Speaker Anita Among to the Parliament of Uganda. Her office, along with the offices of the Government Chief Whip, Parliamentary Commissioners, and the Leader of the Opposition, were targeted in a search operation.

Detectives arrived at Parliament in unmarked vehicles and police vans, carrying evidence collection kits. They sealed off parts of the building, including the Speaker’s chambers, with “Crime Scene, Don’t Cross” notices.

The operation follows several days of intensified investigations into allegations of abuse of office and illicit enrichment, which included raids on Ms. Among’s residences in Nakasero and Munyonyo-Kigo over the weekend. Her luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan and a Range Rover, were seized and towed to Naguru Police Headquarters.

This development comes amid significant political pressure on Ms. Among, with analysts noting a swift decline in her political standing following a meeting with President Museveni. Her position was further complicated by endorsements of rival candidates for the Speakership.

The widening probe has elicited mixed reactions from the public, with some commending the anti-corruption efforts while others question the selectivity of the investigations. The current events also echo anti-corruption protests at Parliament last year, during which protesters demanding Ms. Among’s resignation were arrested.

Ms. Among, who withdrew from the race for the 12th Parliament Speakership, has stated her intention to cooperate with the investigators.
