Following recent election outcomes, a number of Busoga region’s former LC5 chairpersons are embracing new ventures outside of politics. Six out of twelve district heads will not be returning to their offices, prompting some to explore alternative income streams.

Peter Okocha Kasolo, who lost his Jinja City seat, has ventured into poultry farming, crediting government agricultural initiatives for his interest. “I am already in agricultural production, majoring in poultry farming,” Kasolo stated, adding that he also rears goats and grows bananas on his 2.5-acre plot, aiming for both food security and supplemental income.

Michael Kanaku, who stepped down in Buyende, has returned to fishing, a traditional occupation of his Bakenyi community. “For me, I am part of the Bakenyi tribe living in Buyende, whose economic activity is fishing, so I am already working,” he explained, also mentioning his activities in banana and coffee cultivation.

Bugweri’s outgoing chairperson, Hajj Shafiq Muziransa, has shifted to sugarcane farming. Previously involved in growing groundnuts and soya beans, he sees sugarcane as a profitable enterprise in the Busoga region.

Ezra Gabula of Iganga is managing rental properties and cattle projects. “I managed to put up some houses for rent, and that is what is keeping me busy,” Gabula said, noting that the income helps with school fees and household expenses. He also cultivates maize and other cereals.

Salamu Musumba, a former Kamuli chairperson, commented that agriculture is a practical choice for retired district chairpersons, as they do not receive pension or gratuity benefits.

Luuka’s Simon Wakaze and Mayuge’s Bishop Frank Tibagendika are still considering their next steps after leaving their respective offices.
