Residents of Kiwafu Parish in Entebbe were left in shock this past weekend following the death of Carol Nakigudde, a 22-year-old housewife. The incident occurred late Saturday night during a heated argument with her husband, Husama Mukiibi, over Shs 450,000 from a local Savings and Credit Co-operative Organization (SACCO).

According to police reports, it was Nakigudde’s turn to receive the payout from the rotating savings group. However, her husband Mukiibi allegedly received the money but did not hand it over to her, sparking a domestic dispute.

Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala stated that Nakigudde, in the midst of the confrontation, reportedly grabbed a knife and stabbed herself in the neck. Despite her husband’s alleged attempts to intervene, the injury was fatal, and Nakigudde passed away before receiving medical attention.

While the case is initially being treated as a suicide stemming from a domestic dispute, authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to rule out any foul play. The Kampala Metropolitan Police urged individuals involved in domestic disputes to seek help from the Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU).

This incident highlights the potential for financial disagreements, particularly concerning community savings groups, to escalate into severe domestic conflicts. Experts note that such situations can sometimes be forms of economic domestic violence, where financial resources are used as a tool for control.

The investigation into Nakigudde’s death is ongoing, with no charges currently filed against Mukiibi. Forensic inquiries are being conducted to establish the definitive sequence of events.
