Wanyoto, Akiiki Vow to Challenge for Speakership Despite Oboth Oboth's Endorsement

Mbale City Woman MP, Lydia Wanyoto, and Masindi District Woman MP, Florence Akiiki Asiimwe, both from the ruling NRM party, have stated they will not withdraw their aspirations for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament.
This comes despite reports that Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister, Oboth Oboth, has been endorsed for the position. Wanyoto and Akiiki insist that the election process must adhere to established party rules and due diligence, emphasizing that no official call for applications has been made.
“Oboth-Oboth has to express interest and apply. This business of endorsement, we have refused it,” stated Ms Akiiki, adding that procedural rules are being disregarded. She pointed to the NRM Electoral Commission’s mandate to convene the Caucus for candidate elections before Parliament’s first sitting on May 25.
Ms Wanyoto echoed these sentiments, referencing a past situation where purported endorsements for the outgoing Speaker and Deputy Speaker created controversy until President Museveni intervened. She stressed the importance of following Rule 9 of the NRM’s procedural rules, which allows any elected NRM MP to be a candidate.
Both MPs are awaiting an official invitation from the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, to formally express their interest in contesting for the Speaker or Deputy Speaker positions. Wanyoto expressed a desire to contest against Oboth Oboth, whom she described as a long-time friend, and indicated she would also consider the Deputy Speakership if it were reserved for women.
Other individuals reportedly interested in the Speakership include Laroo-Pece MP Mr. Nobert Mao and Ms. Persis Namuganza.
