The Ministry of Health in Uganda has enacted strict measures to curb the potential spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), particularly concerning public gatherings and religious services. These directives come in response to a rise in contacts, reaching 127, and the detection of imported cases.

Organizers of events, including sports, religious congregations, and social functions, must now obtain prior clearance from health authorities. They are also mandated to implement rigorous preventive protocols. Religious leaders are advised to refrain from physical contact with congregants during prayers, such as handshakes and laying on of hands.

The new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) emphasize the critical role of mass gatherings in disease transmission. Organizers are required to notify health officials, conduct risk assessments, and appoint a health and safety focal person. Essential measures include providing adequate handwashing stations with soap or sanitizers and installing thermal scanners to check attendees’ temperatures. Any individual exhibiting a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius must be isolated.

Regular cleaning of communal areas and frequently touched surfaces is also a key requirement. Attendees showing symptoms like fever or cough will be advised to leave the gathering and seek medical attention immediately.

These strengthened controls aim to protect Ugandans, especially given the ongoing Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Ministry stated that two imported cases of Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease were recorded in Kampala, with one patient currently receiving treatment and another who passed away. At least 127 health workers and contacts are under quarantine.

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has confirmed that upcoming events, such as the swearing-in ceremony for the Lord Mayor and councillors, will proceed under these strict Ebola SOPs.
