The Ugandan Ministry of Health has designated 36 districts across the country as being at “very high risk” for the spread of the Ebola virus. This alert comes after the confirmation of two cases in Kampala, both of whom had been seeking medical care after traveling from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
These high-risk districts predominantly include those situated in western Uganda, along the DRC border, refugee-hosting areas, and the capital city, Kampala, along with its neighboring Wakiso district. Several districts in the West Nile sub-region and others like Lamwo, Kiryandongo, Hoima, Kabarole, Kasese, Kanungu, and Isingiro are also on this list.
Health officials attribute the current outbreak risk to ongoing infections in the DRC, where numerous probable and confirmed cases have been reported since April. The confirmed cases in Uganda involved individuals who passed through or resided in districts bordering the DRC before seeking treatment in Kampala.
Frequent cross-border movements for trade, healthcare, and other necessities, coupled with porous borders and Uganda’s role as a refugee host, exacerbate the risk of the virus spreading. The ministry has urged the public to report any individuals exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the situation, classifying the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain as a public health emergency of international concern.
The identified districts are urged to bolster their preparedness and response mechanisms. The Ministry of Health has provided a toll-free line (0800-100-066) and SMS service (6767) for public reporting of potential cases.
