Dr. Henry Mwebesa, leading Uganda’s delegation to the World Health Assembly, has expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to effectively contain the current Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak. He emphasized that Uganda has developed a resilient public health emergency system over time.
“With strong national leadership and collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partners, we shall effectively respond to this outbreak as previously demonstrated,” Dr. Mwebesa stated.
The Ministry of Health reported two imported cases of the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease in Kampala, with one patient receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital’s isolation unit. Both imported cases originated from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and one fatality was recorded on May 14 at Kibuli Muslim Hospital.
Dr. Mwebesa also conveyed Uganda’s support for global health equity initiatives, stressing the need for collective action post-COVID-19. Uganda advocates for a binding Pandemic Agreement centered on fairness, including technology transfer, local manufacturing, and equitable access to medical resources.
Furthermore, he highlighted Uganda’s commitment to ending HIV/AIDS by 2030 and addressed the strain on social services due to hosting over two million refugees, the highest number in Africa. Uganda is seeking increased support from WHO and partners to bolster its health systems for refugee healthcare needs.
