Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagizi has retained her position as the Speaker of Kabale District Council, triumphing over independent candidate Baker Turyamureba. Representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Ms. Kanagizi garnered 21 votes to Mr. Turyamureba’s 14 in elections held on Monday.
Ms. Kanagizi, who is also married to Senior Presidential Advisor George William Kanagizi, is the mother-in-law of former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa. After her re-election, she presided over the council session that saw Tom Ahimbisibwe elected as the deputy speaker.
In her acceptance speech, Ms. Kanagizi thanked the councillors for their support and appealed for collaboration. “I apologise for the mistakes I might have committed during my recently concluded term of office and I call for teamwork for the good of our district,” she stated, adding that unity between councillors and civil servants would be crucial for development.
Following the speaker elections, Kabale District LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi made several nominations for district executive roles, all of which were unanimously approved. These included Primah Hellen Kemanzi as vice chairperson and appointees for key secretarial positions in health, works, finance, and administration.
Mr. Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi outlined his commitment to supporting primary education through the provision of printing equipment for examination papers and ensuring refresher training for teachers on the new curriculum. He also pledged to combat corruption and ensure timely payment of pensions.
Kabale Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Katamba urged residents and civil servants to support the new leadership, echoing President Yoweri Museveni’s call for dedicated service in the new term.
