Kampala’s sports sector is looking forward to a new era under the leadership of Lord Mayor-elect Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga. Known for his background as a civil engineer and a colorful past in boxing, the sports fraternity believes Balimwezo will be a strong advocate for the preservation and development of sports in the capital.
Leaders in various sporting disciplines have expressed hope that Balimwezo’s administration at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) will implement policies to protect vital sports grounds from encroaching developers. Brian Tabaruka, former chairman of Kyadondo Rugby Club, noted Balimwezo’s known enthusiasm for sports and urged for official guarantees to retain existing grounds and acquire more.
Balimwezo himself has previously voiced concern over the diminishing sports spaces in Kampala, citing Lugogo as an example of land originally designated for sports being taken over by other investments. He has called for a united front to protect the remaining grounds.
Sports administrators like Eddie Gombya, president of the Uganda Zurkhaneh and Wushu Federations, have criticized the outgoing administration for perceived neglect of sports. They emphasize Kampala’s role as the epicenter of Ugandan sports and call for consistent engagement from the Lord Mayor’s office.
There is also a strong expectation for increased inclusion and support for para-sports. Wheelchair basketball player Sarah Nazziwa highlighted the need for improved accessibility, including sports facilities with adequate washrooms for users with disabilities, and hopes Balimwezo will prioritize these issues.
The Uganda Olympic Committee, through its president Don Rukare, anticipates a collaborative relationship with KCCA to identify sites for new facilities and promote sports. Rukare also stressed the importance of Balimwezo advocating for sports-friendly policies and prioritizing school sports programs.
Given Balimwezo’s personal engagement with sports and his background, many believe he possesses the drive to foster a more inclusive and vibrant sporting landscape in Kampala. The sports family eagerly awaits his actions to solidify sports’ place in the city’s development plans.
