Security Retrieves Significant Assets During Searches at Anita Among's Residences

Multiple residences of outgoing Parliament Speaker Anita Among, located across Kampala and Wakiso District, have been searched by a joint security task force. During these operations, investigators reportedly seized substantial amounts of money, including sacks of Ugandan Shillings (Shs50,000 denomination), bundles of US Dollars, and Euros.

In addition to cash, the searches yielded a variety of electronic gadgets such as CCTV footage, phones, laptops, tablets, and smartwatches. Motor vehicles, numerous documents including bank statements, company records, cheques, and land titles, were also recovered. These items are expected to be used as exhibits in processing evidence related to allegations of illicit wealth accumulation, money laundering, and abuse of office against Ms. Among.

The investigation is a collaborative effort involving the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (CID) and other intelligence agencies. The operation commenced with a widespread search at Ms. Among’s Nakasero residence, which lasted over eight hours. This probe is understood to have been sanctioned by President Museveni to investigate claims of unexplained enrichment by the Speaker.

The searches occurred shortly after the swearing-in of newly-elected Members of Parliament and before the election for the 12th Parliament’s Speaker. Notably, Ms. Among announced her withdrawal from the Speakership race on Sunday night, citing a desire to maintain harmony within her party, the NRM. She also pledged her cooperation with ongoing state investigations.

These searches follow reports of political maneuvering within the ruling establishment, with some groups reportedly withdrawing support for Ms. Among’s Speakership bid. The political climate in Uganda is currently marked by public calls for accountability and transparency amidst economic challenges.
