Legislators from the Sebei Sub-region have rekindled demands for government action on critical issues impacting their constituents. During recent thanksgiving events in Kapchorwa, MPs united, setting aside political differences to lobby for compensation for families who lost cattle due to decades of insurgency and rustling.
Kapchorwa Municipality MP Patrick Kitiyo Solimo highlighted that while other regions have benefited from restocking programs, Sebei remains unaddressed. He also emphasized the need to resolve ongoing boundary disputes with the neighboring Bugisu region to foster peace and economic development.
Furthermore, the MPs called for immediate intervention for communities affected by landslides in the Mt. Elgon region, referencing the deadly disasters of the previous year that displaced numerous families. Despite government pledges, many remain without resettlement.
“We were killed, and we lost our cattle in the 1960s. Our neighbours are on the restocking plan by the government, while we are nowhere,” stated Mr. Solimo, vowing to unite and fight for their compensatory rights.
The leaders also committed to enhancing oversight on public funds, particularly for road maintenance, and pledged to collaborate with local leaders to combat corruption and improve accountability.
These demands follow years of unmet promises, with Sebei residents expressing frustration over their exclusion from national livestock compensation programs that have been implemented in other sub-regions. While the Prime Minister recently acknowledged these demands, no specific timeline for action has been provided.
