On May 18, 2026, a striking procession saw luxury cars, including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover recently seized from Anita Among’s home in Kigo, Wakiso District, driven through the heart of Kampala. The convoy was en route to the police headquarters in Naguru.

The procession arrived just as a heavy rain began to fall, an event that observers noted as a potent symbol of the Bukedea Woman MP’s significant fall from grace. This development occurred less than 12 hours after Ms. Among announced her withdrawal from the race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament.

In a statement posted on X, Ms. Among declared her decision to not contest for the Speakership to “maintain harmony and clarity” within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. She pledged her support to candidates endorsed by the President and the party.

Political analysts suggest Ms. Among’s rapid downfall began after a State House meeting on the preceding Thursday, where she was reportedly questioned over corruption allegations. This was followed by events such as the announcement of a new Speaker candidate by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and a search of her residences by investigators.

Political commentators view Ms. Among’s current situation as a significant downturn in her political career. Dr. Juma Sultan Kakuba of Kyambogo University stated that regaining her previous standing would be extremely difficult, characterizing her as currently perceived as Uganda’s most corrupt politician. Professor Sabiti Makara of Kabale University attributed her downfall to a failure to accurately read the political climate and a reckless acquisition of wealth.
