Prima Kardashi, a prominent media personality, has voiced strong opinions regarding the visual output of Uganda’s music industry. She contends that while many local artists produce good music, their music videos often lack the quality and sophistication needed to appeal to international audiences, thus limiting their global reach.
According to Kardashi, a compelling song is no longer sufficient for success. Artists must now invest in high-definition videos, engaging narratives, and professional styling to compete on the continental stage. She specifically pointed to her friend, AnKnown Prosper, urging him to elevate his video production, noting that his current visuals appear too “local” despite his talent.
In contrast, Kardashi commended Joshua Baraka for his understanding of brand identity, highlighting his modern style and clear storytelling in music videos as a benchmark for others. She also took a swipe at artists who prioritize song recording over video production, often neglecting crucial elements like styling and professional execution.
Kardashi emphasized that factors such as wardrobe, casting, shooting locations, and lighting are critical indicators of an artist’s professionalism. She advised musicians to move away from rushed, poorly planned video shoots and repetitive concepts, arguing that these low-budget productions are stifling the growth of the Ugandan music industry and preventing artists from breaking into wider markets.
