Uganda is witnessing a significant escalation in its fight against corruption with the introduction of “Operation Maliza Ufisadi” (Operation End Corruption), spearheaded by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
This intensified campaign follows closely on the heels of a high-profile corruption probe involving the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among. Gen. Muhoozi announced that the operation is already making strides, with substantial illicitly acquired wealth and property being recovered. He noted that a preliminary report detailing these recoveries would be released soon, with all recovered assets slated to be returned to the national treasury.
In a stern warning aimed at public officials, Gen. Muhoozi conveyed that President Museveni has granted sweeping powers to security forces, permitting the arrest of any individual in Uganda, with the sole exceptions being the President and the First Lady. This directive creates an environment of significant uncertainty for the nation’s political class.
Focusing on the capital, Kampala, Gen. Muhoozi attributed the city’s persistent infrastructure problems and flooding issues to decades of embezzlement by previous administrators. He criticized the failure to maintain drainage systems and the encroachment on natural wetlands.
In a drastic measure to combat mismanagement, Gen. Muhoozi announced that the entire budget for Kampala’s road infrastructure will now be directly managed by his office. This centralization of power aims to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively and to deliver tangible improvements to the city’s infrastructure, with Gen. Muhoozi vowing to transform Kampala into a city with “the best roads and pavements in Africa.”
“Operation Maliza Ufisadi will ensure that stealing from Kampala is treated with the utmost severity,” Gen. Muhoozi stated, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to ending corruption.
