The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is implementing stringent health and safety protocols for the upcoming swearing-in ceremony of the new Lord Mayor and councillors. The event, scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, will proceed as planned but with a strict adherence to Ebola standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the Ministry of Health.

KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi affirmed that the ceremony is a vital milestone for the city’s democratic governance and leadership transition. “KCCA remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, dignified and well-organised event,” Kigenyi stated.

In response to the confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease in Kampala, KCCA has worked closely with President Yoweri Museveni’s directives and the Ministry of Health. The authority has confirmed that adequate handwashing facilities, soap, clean water, and sanitisers will be available at the venue. Thermal scanners will be used to screen all attendees.

“Anybody with a temperature exceeding 38 degrees will be isolated for further investigations,” Kigenyi warned. Focal persons for health and safety will be designated to coordinate with Ministry of Health officials, and facilities will undergo thorough cleaning and disinfection. Waste management materials will also be provided.

KCCA urges all invited guests and the public to cooperate fully with health officials and observe all mandated safety measures. The new council will include 34 councillors and the Lord Mayor-elect, Ronald Balimwezo.
