Jinja City Council has greenlit a Shs79 billion budget for the 2026/2027 fiscal year, with a strong focus on infrastructural development and enhancing public services. Key areas slated for investment include road networks, sanitation facilities, healthcare, education, and street lighting, all aimed at modernizing the city.

The budget also emphasizes improved garbage collection and environmental management, which officials believe are crucial for public health, safety, and attracting investors. Outgoing Speaker Barnard Mbayo highlighted that the council’s priorities address long-standing urban challenges and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

Significant improvements are expected for over 40 kilometers of the road network, designed to ease transportation and boost service delivery across various sectors. Investments in health and education aim to strengthen human capital, while enhanced street lighting and waste management systems are intended to bolster security and the city’s overall appearance.

Jinja City’s local revenue collection has seen a notable increase, rising from Shs2 billion to Shs15 billion following a reorganization of trade operations. The council anticipates further growth to Shs20 billion in the next fiscal year through continued enforcement and expansion of revenue streams.

Plans are also in motion to upgrade public recreational spaces like Ripon Gardens and Nile Gardens. However, challenges such as a non-operational public toilet at Ripon Garden, reportedly closed due to a lack of clear operating guidelines, and the occupation of gardens by informal groups highlight ongoing issues that need addressing.
