Arsenal has ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, achieving the feat not solely through their acclaimed attacking flair, but by developing a formidable strength in set-pieces.

Mikel Arteta’s side embraced a more pragmatic strategy, leveraging set-piece opportunities as a cornerstone of their goal-scoring, especially when facing stubborn defenses or dealing with attacking injuries.

This season, Arsenal broke Manchester United’s 2012-13 record by scoring 24 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League. Their 18 goals from corners alone surpassed any previous record in a single Premier League season.

While not abandoning their attacking principles, the team expanded its repertoire to break down opponents who employed deep defensive blocks. Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the realities of Premier League football, stating, “If you want to watch that football, you have to go to a different country because in the Premier League, for the last two seasons or three seasons, this is not the case.”

Trusting set-piece coach Nicolas Jover proved decisive, transforming Arsenal into ‘cold-blooded title contenders’. Their efficiency from dead-ball situations accounted for 36% of their total goals, leading to debates about them “winning ugly.”

Arsenal’s set-piece routines, executed with precision using decoys and blockers, became a significant weapon, causing anxiety for opponents. The team has also undergone a physical transformation, becoming a more imposing side, a stark contrast to earlier eras.

This new steel, combined with their attacking talent, has proven effective, even setting a record for most match-winning goals from a corner in a season by March.

The effectiveness of this approach will face its ultimate test in the upcoming Champions League final against Paris St Germain.
