Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who appeared to be on track for re-election, now faces an unpredictable contest.

Initially, Tayebwa, an ally of Speaker Anita Among, was favored to retain his position, having expressed confidence in securing the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) endorsement. He highlighted his long-standing loyalty to the party and his working relationship with Speaker Among.

However, recent actions by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a group associated with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, have altered the political landscape. The PLU withdrew its endorsement for both Among and Tayebwa, urging its members to support candidates who receive President Museveni’s backing.

While the PLU has not yet named a candidate for Deputy Speaker, several names are reportedly being considered within the group. These include Lillian Aber, Jane Ruth Aceng, and Robinah Rwakoojo. Mbale City Woman MP Lydia Wanyoto has also publicly declared her interest in the role.

The race has widened significantly, with attention now focused on the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) to formally decide on the party’s candidates. Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa, newly elected Woman MP for Sheema District, has also announced her intention to contest for the Deputy Speaker position.

This situation leaves the Deputy Speaker race wide open, with the NRM’s internal decision-making process expected to be crucial in shaping the final outcome.
