What began as a thanksgiving ceremony for West Budama Central legislator Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth in Mukono rapidly evolved into a substantial political event over the weekend. The gathering, attended by over 500 guests including government officials, NRM leaders, and newly elected Members of Parliament, was marked by a notable display of security and political calculation, contrasting with events in Kampala.
Senior NRM officials such as Dr. Tanga Odoi, Rose Namayanja, and Haruna Kasolo were present, alongside cabinet ministers and a delegation representing the Chief of Defence Forces. The event gained significant political momentum following an endorsement for the Speaker position from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), via his social media platform.
This public backing, coupled with attendance from key military and political figures, signaled a potential shift in Oboth-Oboth’s aspirations for the speakership. While Oboth-Oboth had previously expressed interest in the role and stepped aside for Jacob Oulanyah and later Anita Among, recent events suggest a stronger push this time.
During the event, PLU Secretary General David Kabanda officially announced Gen. Kainerugaba’s endorsement and stated that President Museveni also backs Oboth-Oboth’s bid for the next Speaker of Parliament. This announcement was met with considerable celebration, and several MPs present publicly pledged their support.
