The much-anticipated 19th Cultural Enthronement Anniversary of the Alur King, Phillip Olarker Rauni III, has been officially postponed. The celebration, originally slated for Kaal Atyak-Winam in Zombo District, was a major event expected to draw large crowds from Uganda and the DRC.

Kingdom officials cited the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Bunia area of the DRC, approximately 185 kilometers from Zombo, as the primary reason for the postponement. Prime Minister Prince Lawrence Opar Angala stated that public safety is paramount and a new date will be announced once public health directives are lifted.

The Alur King has urged all subjects, both in Uganda and the DRC, to remain vigilant and adhere to Ministry of Health and WHO guidelines for Ebola prevention. This precautionary measure aligns with broader public health responses in Uganda, including the earlier postponement of the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC’s Ituri Province has raised significant concerns among regional health bodies. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is closely monitoring the situation, which has seen hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths. Factors such as population movement, mining activities, and insecurity are complicating response efforts and increasing the risk of regional spread.

Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya has emphasized the critical need for rapid regional coordination to contain the disease, working closely with the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan to bolster surveillance and response capabilities.
